Enerkem Alberta Biofuels

As experienced heavy industrial contractors, Carlson Construction was hired to perform major concrete work for the foundations of Enerkem’s Wastewater Treatment 12,000 sq ft building and other site areas including the Gasifier. Enerkem Alberta Biofuels’ building is constructed 25 ft above grade on massive concrete foundations. The work included construction of the foundations for pipe racks and the cooling tower as well as formwork and additional concrete work.

Enerkem Alberta Biofuels has pioneered a clean technology platform designed to address the world’s need for innovative solutions to waste management and the demand for a clean energy supply. Founded in 2000, the company has developed a unique thermo-chemical technology that converts waste into transportation fuels and chemicals.

Enerkem has signed a 25-year agreement with the City of Edmonton to build and operate a plant that will produce and sell next generation biofuels, including methanol and cellulosic ethanol, from sorted municipal solid waste (MSW). This is the world’s first agreement between a large urban centre and a biofuel producer to turn municipal waste into ethanol.
