Royal Glenora Club

The Royal Glenora Club opened in 1961, and remains Edmonton’s premiere member-owned sport and social club.  

Over the course of a decade, the Club underwent reviews of its facilities and identified re-development priorities, which included renovations and additions set to impact nearly every area of the club. 

After a series of initiatives involving in-depth membership consultation and the detailed services of high-profile consultants, the membership voted to proceed with the required expenditure for redevelopment according to the design development renderings. The Club then issued an RFQ, followed by an RFP, as part of an exhaustive search for the project’s construction manager. Out of a field of nearly two dozen top-flight contenders, Carlson Construction Ltd. was selected as the construction manager for the multi-phase redevelopment project.   

New amenities included a gymnasium and fitness centre, locker rooms fitted with steam rooms and hot tubs, south facing floor-to-ceiling aluminum windows throughout the second-floor dining and banquet facilities. The design incorporated the refinishing and modification to existing glulam beams and solid wood structural ceilings throughout. The large 8,500 square foot patio maximized excellent south-facing exposure, all while conveniently overlooking the North Saskatchewan River. 

Given the extensive demolition, renovation and building additions that varied in complexity, Carlson anticipated the potential challenges that could be exposed, and positioned our team, including mechanical, electrical, and consultants, to diligently identify existing building conditions and prepare cost-effective construction solutions in a timely matter. 

The Royal Glenora area is an extremely active environment, and a high priority was placed on limiting member disruption and ensuring safety. The naturally congested site provided limited space and opportunity for laydown, deliveries, and parking. Carlson successfully constructed this project within the constraints while maintaining safety for all workers, members, visitors, and staff.
