Transforming a Historic Theatre into a Modern Distillery and Restaurant
The Maligne Range is a bar, restaurant, and whisky distillery that celebrates Canadian whisky culture in a refined, immersive space.
Owned by Bearhill and located in the former Chaba Theatre, a local landmark for 94 years, the project was both a restoration and a transformation. Carlson demolished the sloped theatre interior, installed a new steel pan floor, and reconfigured the space to include a full kitchen, two large bars, dining and lounge areas, and a retail shop.
Construction was completed on a tight timeline, just one day before Jasper was hit by wildfires in July 2024. The fires destroyed one-third of the town’s structures and caused widespread damage. Despite the evacuation, The Maligne Range sustained only minor smoke damage and was able to reopen two months later, a powerful testament to the resilience of Jasper.
